The series opens with a haunting twist in the quiet town of Wausau, Wisconsin. Without warning, the dead begin to return to life. But they are not your typical zombies. We’re introduced to Dana Cypress, a police officer and single mom who is about to leave town for a new job. Her plans are suddenly put on hold when she’s called in by her father, Sheriff Wayne Cypress, after the dead start showing up alive. Dana quickly becomes part of the investigation as Wausau turns into ground zero for this bizarre and terrifying phenomenon.
Soon, a CDC investigator named Ibrahim “Lester” Ramin arrives to help figure out what is going on. He and Dana discover disturbing signs, including a dead horse with human teeth in its stomach and revived humans whose injuries heal instantly. It becomes clear that these returned people are not only alive but also completely resistant to harm.
The mystery hits close to home when Dana’s younger sister, Martha “Em” Cypress, who had been missing for weeks, suddenly returns. She seems fine, but Dana can tell something is off. Things escalate when the sisters explore a hidden barn and are attacked by another Reviver. Em is stabbed during the struggle but recovers immediately. That’s when the truth comes out. Em is one of the Revivers, and she doesn’t even know it yet.
